I don't take photos as much as I used to. It was a daily habit of mine for many years. I am not sure why this is, but what I have found, that because I don't photograph my every day, is that my work now is less about documenting the people in my life, and more about the documenting textures and nature that I connect with and experience.
There are elements that I come across that draw me in. Maybe it is an illuminating light that grabs me or a window that I can't help but wonder about. It can be a curtain swaying from a fan. Sometimes it is just as simple as a crack in the pavement or a rotting door hinge. Catching myself noticing such moments gives my introverted self something to meditate on. I appreciate that I give myself the time to slow down and find ways to capture these unique images with my camera. I know it always gives me energy to do so. It also provides me time to reflect on these experiences through the visual and moving images I create. Below are some photos from 2016. They are an example of what I speaking about. Moments from England where the camera for me was an extension of where I was and what I was absorbing. I am also including Number 1, the first in a series of video diaries I will create over the next year. It is not a 365 day project, but I aim to post videos often. Below is my first silent video diary entry. Number 1 was shot in London and Manchester. The footage used were the last moving images I shot in 2016. I edited it today. More video diary entries to come! Happy 2017.
